I'm in the airport in Honolulu. We were actuallly all on the plane, ready to go, seatbelts on, cabin luggage stoyed, seats in the upright position when we were told that we had to get off because they had to replace one of the airconditioning units. That was over two hours ago now. I'm not sure when I'm going to get into Sydney now nor what shape I'm going to be in when I get there. I spent $5 to get 25min on the internet of whicj I have about 6.5 left. While my time home on this trip was wonderful (and funny enough, I just remembered that i forgot to put the wedding photos on a disc like I planned) and time with family was great, the getting there and now the getting back have been two of my less pleasant trips. Anyway, getting an update, maitinence still working, comfort and safety important and that's it. No new news. Argh. Anyway, have 4min to go write Mom an email. Love to all!

I'm on the phone with Apple at the moment. Have been for at least 25min. See, I ordered an 8G red ipod nano last week on Wednesday. On Thursday I first heard that Apple was making an announcement this week and there was speculation that there would be changes to the nano. I didn't think the changes would be that drastic and I thought I'd be fine with my little red. But then I went on the website yesterday and the changes are pretty big. I could have video! And a bigger screen! It may look a little fat but it's still cute. So, for the third time, as I called yesterday to get the $80 back as the price change from my order and I put that through but I still hadn't decided if I wanted to change my order and then I did decide to change but I didn't get through before they closed, so, I'm on the line now for the third time and it's so boring! Nicko was around last night to chat to so the...am though! Back later. Possibly much later.

If you read this, if your eyes are passing over this right now, even if we don't speak often, please post a comment with a memory of you and me. It can be anything you want--good or bad. When you're finished, post this little paragraph on your blog and be surprised (or mortified) about what people remember about you.

Nicko's Questions [Apr. 9th, 2005|10:32 am]
[Current Mood | silly]

1. Revenge is a dish, best served how, to your mind?

In small, unpredictable courses, both hot and cold, over a long, long time.

2. "And we shall reject ________, ________, and_______" [Finish, for your own view in life]

...intolerance, stupidity, and clowns (the broad definition which includes mimes and dummies)

3. Tell us of a defining moment, a near-single point in time when your life changed dramatically, for better or worse.

Okay, this moment didn't seem dramatic at the time but looking back I can say that I was changed from that point on. I was about 11 or 12 and I had finally ventured over to the adult side of the library to find Star Trek books (yup, a geek then too). Anyway, this guy (and I can't remember if he was old or young or whatever, he might have even worked there at the time) so he sees me at the sci-fi rack and he tells me if I like that stuff then I may like these books. And he introduced me to Raymond E. Feist, my very first fantasy books. Up until then it was a lot of Little House, Babysitters club, miscellaneous kid fiction, some non-fiction on animals and the aforementioned Star Trek but no fantasy. I don't think I've looked back since. And to that mysterious stranger, I like to extend my eternal gratitude because he opened up worlds for me.

4. Is there a quote which concisely sums up your life/beliefs? If so, what is it?

"Whatever floats your boat as long as you don't hurt others"

5. "It's the End of the world as we know it." When does it end, how does it end, and do you feel fine?

This one took me a while until I thought about the 'as we know it' part. Then I had fun. So the world as we know it ends in about ten years when Nicko develops a cheap, safe nuclear energy source and invents Star Trek-style transporters on the side (honey, don't go into the reasons why they wouldn't work, just indulge my little fantasy) and I learn how to mange stress and not procrastinate. So, I get to have my big farmhouse with a huge garden and plenty of space for many puppies to roam and ramble but still have easy access to a city with nice tea shops, movies and most importantly, bookstores. People miraculously stop being stupid and learn to get along or at least learn to disagree without resorting to large-scale conflicts. Intellectual and artistic expression abound and everyone has adequate shelter, food, access to education and health resources. I can throw huge, elaborate dinner parties for my friends no matter what hemisphere they live in and go climbing all the time. I'll have my PhD and can teach the wonders of sci-fi, fantasy and graphic novels to bright, eager young minds. And I'll go on Jeopardy and beat Ken's record (both money and number of consecutive shows). So, yeah, I'd be feeling fine. Oh, and scientific research, pure research, gets all the funding it deserves and the White House finally admits that George W. Bush was a poorly made robot.

Watch out! Hell's a-waiting!! [Mar. 3rd, 2005|07:25 pm]
Okay, so I was in my psyc class and I got there a little late because my English class ran late and she mentions that we're going to watch a video after she finishes the current section and I think "yay, movie time!". No, turns out it wasn't not a "yay" but a "I want to throw up now and violently". It was a segment of a special edition the Fifth Estate (I think) and it was on these things called "Hell Houses". Apparently, about 13 years ago in Texas this minister came up with an idea for an alternative to the traditional Halloween haunted house. This house would show scenes designed to scare people into Christianity. For instance, a young girl might be raped by her stepfather who then kills her mother; the girl, in turn, shoots the father and then kills herself, thereby landing herself in Hell (him as well, I guess, it didn't really show). Yup, it was all 'real life' scenes in which someone makes a choice that sends them to Heaven or Hell. And there is some minions of Hell, I guess you'd call them, who narrate the scenes and urge the characters to damn themselves. Okay, and if you think that is bad, just wait. One of the scenes of a young gay man who decides to kill the classmates who bully him, actions which send him to hell, not only because he murdered someone but mainly because he was gay. Yup, the anti-gay vibe was incredibly blantent. The absolute worst thing was that these shows were targeted to kids, teens. And they've migrated to Canada. There's a church in Lethbridge, Alberta who had one of these at least in 2003 which was when the thing was filmed and there were kids as young as 12 trying out. I honestly thought that I was going to vomit. At the end, one girl in my class remarked that the way the ministeres were talking it sounded like induction to a cult. One minister actually commented (not a direct quote)that it's all well and good to preach goodness and love and mercy but fear of hell is also a part of Christianity. And someone mentioned how most devot Christians become so before the age of 18 so it's important to hook'em young. Which lead someone in my class to comment how most youth haven't finished their identity formation by 18 so they are in a sense looking for someone or something to tell them who to be. Made me mad. Very, very mad. There are some stupid, stupid people in the world. Although to be fair to Texans, one girl who went through the house did remark that she found parts of it offensive; she was looking around quite nervously as she did so. Anyway, that's my little rant. I may google these things, just to see what's out there.

The Departure [Feb. 26th, 2005|10:04 pm]
He's in Vancouver now boarding the flight to Sydney. Every bit of me hurts. But we have a plan and we will work hard and time will pass and then I will be there. It makes the thought of tomorrow easier. But I don't want to sleep tonight. I don't want to wake up alone.

I was going to write a little mini-rant about all the people who can't seem to remember how the library works but I just had someone come to the desk, ask for something by call number and he thanked me and that reminded me that the people who do try to eat here or ask to renew laptops or ask for 'the big green book', they are the minority and most patrons are pretty good. So, no rant.

Quick Update [Jun. 16th, 2004|10:42 am]
All right, this is just a very quick post about what's going on now. I promise that at some point in the future I will backtrack and fill in the missing weeks but for right now this will have to do. At the moment I am recovering from a hectic few days (and maybe I mean 'day' instead of 'days') of trying to finish my last essay for my Feminism and Literature class. I was going to try to write an essay and do some context questions for my other English class, Settler Culture Writing, but then I realized that trying to write a 2500 word essay and do ten half-page questions (some on books that I haven't exactly read yet) in just two days was just setting myself up for a breakdown. So instead I'm going to write the exam on the 24th and spend Friday at an amusement park with friends. My last exam is on the 25th and that's my psychopathology course, all multiple choice, it shouldn't be too bad.

Then, on June 26th, I'm going to try to fit about 20-25 people in my apartment for a Canada party. All guests are asked to dress to express their inner Canadian, which should be interesting; drenching one's self with maple syrup seems to be a popular idea for a costume. Did anyone at home realize that Degrassi was exported here? Yup, millions of Australian children grew up with Joey, Snake and Wheels and the rest of the gang. My friend AJ is trying to round up people to go as characters but none of our American or European friends have any clue what he's talking about.

Anyway, I must go try to read either Out of Africa or The Fortunes of Richard Mahony, I'll probably end up comatose somewhere in the library. Sorry for the lack of info lately, I've been trying to spend as much time as possible with friends here. There's a lot of people that I am going to miss a great deal.

Melbourne and beyond... [May. 25th, 2004|09:07 am]
I was a little nervous about writing as it's been so long, I'm not quite sure where to start. So much has happened over the last month, my trip now seems very long ago. Perhaps rather than go through my trip day-by-day as I planned I may just give a general overview of the week I was away. The only problem with that is that I'm not very good at being brief (as many of you know).

Anyway, because of all the breakdowns we ended up getting transferred to a bus (or road coach) at Albury and driving the rest of the way to Melbourne. After three hours on the bus we pulled into Melbourne at about 11:30pm, 5 hours overdue. We had missed our connection to Adelaide and now had to find a place to sleep for the night. One word of advice: do not count on a good night's sleep in a youth hostel, especially when you're in a sixteen-bed room. Anita and I got up early, helped ourselves to the free breakfast (toast and various spreads) and went to see what to do about our ticket. I must say that I have very favorable impressions of Melbourne and its residents. Everyone was very helpful and friendly. Our tickets were changed to that night with no trouble at all, the lady at the information counter suggested many sights to see and a fellow tourist going back to Sydney gave us her two all-day tram passes.

So Anita and I stored our luggage at the station and spent the day riding trams (very fun), napping in parks, touring the Queen Victoria Market (so, so, so many things I wanted to buy!) and checking out the sidewalk market at St Kilda beach (again so many pretty things!). It was a really great day and I was actually glad that our train was late because otherwise we wouldn't have seen Melbourne at all except to change trains.

We got back to the train station around 7:30-8pm and played cards until our train to Adelaide arrived around 10pm. Both of us slept most of the way there. Looking out the window the last hour or so of the ride, I could see the differences in the landscape between the different cities. Adelaide is a very sprawling city that does not appear as big as it actually is. I actually thought it was a pretty small city until my last couple of days. Anita and I made arrangements for a place to stay for the night as we weren't able to go directly to Fuzzy's Farm where we hoped to spend most of the week.

We got settled and spent the day touring Adelaide, taking pictures, doing some shopping and just seeing the sights. We had thought to check out one of the karaoke bars (her idea, not mine) but were just too tired. Fuzzy himself picked us up the next day and we went up into Adelaide Hills, about 20mins from the city centre.

I'm not sure exactly what I was expecting. The description in Anita's travel guide suggested a busy working farm but it seems that Fuzzy may have fallen on hard times. There were goats, quite a few very cute goats who would run to the fence and nibble on your fingers. And the cabin we stayed in was beautiful, very cozy and rustic. There was a large lounge area with a tv, fireplace, stereo, a shelf full of all-sorted paperbacks, a semi-comfortable orange sofa and a coffee table. From the sofa you could look out the patio doors to the covered deck which had a BBQ and a picnic table. The deck faced the a steep, tree-covered hill. The bathroom and laundry room were just off the living room as was the room that Anita and I shared. Our room had two single beds, a fireplace and a bureau. There was a door between our room and the kitchen but my bed was against it and it hadn't looked like it was used in a while. The kitchen was in the middle of the cabin and had an opening into the lounge area and a small trapdoor through which one could look into the front bedroom. The fireplace in the kitchen had been converted to a cupboard. We didn't spend much time in the two front rooms but we did investigate. The room next to ours was another bedroom, this one with a double bed, and the last room looked as if it had been another living area but now had two bunkbeds in it. The cabin could sleep about eight comfortably but at the time it was just Anita and I. The arrangement with Fuzzy was that we would pay our first night and then after that we would do several hours work around the farm to cover our board.

All right, once more I must run to class but hopefully this post with be satisfactory for now. I'll look through my journal tonight to see if I missed any important details.

Quick Post [May. 4th, 2004|09:35 am]
I know you all have been waiting a while for this but as I have class in 20 mins, I'm sorry this must be short. As well, the library computers have a virus and I may, at any time, get a message that this machine will shut down in 1 min. Yes, it is very frustrating.

All right, so my adventure began at 5:30am on the morning of Saturday, April 10. My friend Anita and I were catching the 7:43am train to Melbourne. We were due to arrive in Melbourne at 6:30 and then we would depart for Adelaide at 10:10pm that night. Or so that was the plan.

We weren't sure how long it would take us to get into the city as the bus we normally would take did not run until 7:20, not giving us enough time. But having become complete urbanites and confident in our ability to commute, we made it to the train station with plenty of time to spare. And we waited. Train arrived, we boarded and we waited. Message came over the loudspeaker that there were difficulties so we got off the train. And waited. Finally, now more than an hour overdue, we reboarded, got settled in and left the station. Only to break down about 2hrs later. Apparently, they just tried to fix the engine problem rather than hook up a new one like they said they were going to. But the engineer managed to re-repair the problem and we were moving once again. For a little while at least. So set the pattern for the whole day. We would get moving, plug along for a while and then the engine would die. Yes, there are two engines and one was always working but you seem to need both to climb some of the hills. It may seem from my writing that it was a stressful situation but I found myself actually enjoying it. Initially the scenery reminded me a lot of Nova Scotia, only a little hillier but it got dryer as we moved on. I read, wrote, talked to Anita, watched the family in front of us with the young mother who would not stop cursing, the older daughter who asked for a party for her 6th brithday but promised her mother that there would be no drinking and the younger daughter (around 2) who almost called her mother a bitch. Yup, it was an interesting trip. And now I must run to class. Will write more when I get the chance.

Return of the Weary Wanderer... [Apr. 22nd, 2004|11:49 am]
Yes, I am now safely back in Sydney having spent time in Melbourne and Adelaide. Details of my journey will be forthcoming, I'm just getting caught up on seeing friends and schoolwork and enjoying having my apartment to myself. I have discovered that I really like traveling by train; youth hostels, while cheap, do not guarantee a great night's sleep; and that it's not a great idea to go to McDonald's when you haven't eaten in about 14hrs. Must go read the Temptations of Big Bear for Tuesday. Please be patient as I have a midterm and two essays due in the next two weeks so it may actually be a while before I post again.
